Getting to know you: The Basics

by thedemuremuse on January 16, 2011

I’m always super curious to know what other bloggers do outside of blogging. I guess I’m guilty for this since I don’t talk about what I do too much aside from my wardrobe and kitchen experiments. I thought it would be fun to start another fun column that has been lovingly titled “Getting to know you”.

I wanted to kick this one off with a bit of the activities I do in my spare time. As much as I wish that my life could revolve around nothing but dressing myself on a daily basis and making (and eating) oodles of cookies, I’ve made a promise to myself in 2011 to take better care of myself. After years of being a huge junk food addict, I’m starting to learn that my metabolism just isn’t what it used to be. Curse those Big Macs for being so delicious but artery-blocking at the same time!

In all honesty, I’m not one for physical activities. When given the option, I’ll take an escalator instead of stairs. I’ve had my fair share of short-lived sport affairs starting with gymnastics (until I grew too tall for the uneven bars, hah!), then moving on to a few years of tennis, a season of basketball in high school, and then a couple seasons of badminton. After I moved out and started living on my own, I stopped going to the gym and being interested in physical activities. I just didn’t have the motivation to drag myself out to a gym. Not to mention whenever I moved to a new city, I was too shy to join any local leagues for fear of being the newbie of the group.

This all changed at the end of 2010 when I started playing squash. Buying a racquet was one of the most impulsive decisions I’ve ever made in terms of sport-related purchases. I remember messaging one of my friends and telling him that I was in the market for a workout partner. After agreeing to motivate each other to play squash at least once a week, we headed to the mall on a mission to find the perfect squash racquet. Having never played squash before, we were both quite confused about what to look for. Like said, this was an impulsive decision with not much thought put into it other than, “Squash gives an all-over workout, right? Right! Let’s go get equipment!!”

We both ended up buying the same racquet, which came with safety goggles and a set of double yellow dot balls. Being the noobs that we are, we had no idea that the double yellow dots meant that we would be in for a workout! Turns out these balls have very little bounce and have a slow speed, which forces us to run like crazy. Yes, I’ve since learned my lesson to research a sport before committing to it.

Aside from squash, I joined an intramural dodgeball team. A lot of people poke fun at me for playing dodgeball because they think of the movie Dodgeball and Ben Stiller’s shenanigans in the movie. Sadly, dodgeball is actually the one sport where I’ll get extremely competitive (which ends up being a huge motivator for pushing myself harder and working out more) since I’m one of a handful of females in the league. I was actually the only female on the team last season! I signed up for another season of dodgeball this year and it looks like here are going to be three of us ladies on the team together! YAY!

One last activity that I want to participate more in this year is yoga. I first tried Hatha yoga in January 2010 and found it to be quite challenging to keep up with. Despite being able to touch my toes after two sessions (having never been able to touch my toes since the age of 12, when I quit gymnastics), I wasn’t able to commit enough time to yoga. Life got in the way and I only ended up going to 3 or 4 of the 9 sessions I paid for. I tried Bikram over the summer of 2010 and called it quits after 2 sessions. As great as my body felt after the 90 minute class, I felt like I was going to pass out or puke during the class.

I’ve decided to give yoga another shot in 2011. I joined a yoga club with drop-in classes for various difficulty levels. I’m hoping that the drop-in sessions help with my ever-changing weekly schedule. The reason why the first classes in 2010 didn’t work out is because my schedule kept changing and I couldn’t devote my Thursday nights to yoga after the first couple of classes. I like the idea of being able to drop-in for sessions that work around my schedule.

I hope I’m not being overly ambitious this year. I want to take better care of myself and am trying to keep myself motivated through different mediums of activities.

What do you guys do to stay in shape?

I thought I would open up this column to you as well. Is there anything you’d like to get to know about me? Feel free to leave suggestions for future topics in the comments. I’ll try my best to make it happen!

Pole dancing, rock climbing, running! I never played sports as a kid (except for one fail season of soccer, eh) but when I got older, I just figured I’d try things that interested me. I love these! I am going to try trapeze arts next :)

Oh gosh, I was heavily into swimming and ice-skating to an extent. I had asthma growing up and my parents enrolled me into swimming lessons when I was 8 to help out my lungs, and also as a life-saving tool. Thankfully, I’ve outgrown my asthma and don’t suffer from it anymore, but it’s been a looong time since I’ve been swimming because of my skin :\ I developed eczema 4 years ago and couldn’t go to the pool because of it so now that I have it under control (sort of, I still get flare-ups, but meh) I can finally get back into it.

And I just walk a lot :) Richard and I gives ourselves blisters, lol. Richard plays squash with a friend regularly too. I don’t play. I’m too competitive and will rip someone’s head off >_< That's why I like things I can do by myself, haha.

I love that you have such unique ways of staying in shape. I would have never thought of squash & dodgeball – props to you!

I was either a gymnast or a dancer until I hit college, so I prefer structured workout classes. I belong to a gym and try to take 3-4 different classes each week. For example, this last week I did yoga, pilates, kickboxing, and Zumba. Mixing up the classes keeps me from getting bored. I also meet friends at the gym, and the social aspect keeps me motivated.

I did gymnastics for 7 years or so, quite when I was 12 because I was getting too tall/heavy. Then I played soccer for a few years…

That’s about it. When I lived in Germany I walked/biked everywhere and even though I drank all the time, I was in good shape. I try to make myself go to the gym now, but it gets awfully boring, plus our local gym is really crowded and the wait time is pretty long for certain things.

I’d like to do pilates or spinning, which I did when I was in college, but lately just don’t feel like making the effort. Sad, but true.

I did get Just Dance for Wii, so I do that. hahaha

I’ve just started yoga and pilates.. I am super weak and so really struggle with both but I can feel myself getting better. Yoga can be for everyone, it’s just about finding the right teacher and class. I would NOT start with hot yoga until you get used to the poses. Keep doing hatha and other styles and see if you can find a class you are comfortable with. It is challenging, but you will feel improvement quickly.

I am not in shape at all though. I still do not work out enough and my body has no concept of being pushed. I used to swim a lot but stopped early hs and now am out of shape.

I hope our paths cross sometime soon. I might be East next year but am in Vancity until at least Sept. Let me know if you end up nearby <3

I also used to do gymnastics! I was super serious about it for about 7 years, but then I had to quit because of lots of injuries. Also, I wanted to have a life and go to birthday parties and watch TV after school instead of going to the gym.

Now, I really like hatha yoga, and doing cardio and weights at the gym. I’m also starting to run! My goal is to run a 5k. I’ve also dabbled in ultimate frisbee, even though I’ve never been a big team sports person. A bunch of the grad students in my department play every week and it’s quite a workout.

I love that you play squash! I’ve never played a racquet sport before but I’d love to try.

As for future getting-to-know-you posts – I’d love to hear about your favorite books!

Well I just signed up for drop-in yoga classes and as you know… I absolutely loved my first class. I think it helps that it’s not one of those traditional yoga classes (I would probably fall asleep). Combine an enthusiastic teacher, modern music and your bestie, and there you have it: perfection! Other than yoga, I play badminton (used to play competitively for 5 years) and tennis whenever I can. I’m going to try out Zumba sometime this week too, heard it’s a lot of fun. I’m the kind of person who has to have fun working out, and I really dread doing the treadmill/elliptical machine sort of things (even though I bought an elliptical last year to “motivate” me to get in shape; which obviously, didn’t work out so well). :P

Can I suggest that your next “getting to know you” be about food?
It is endlessly interesting to me. I want you to name everything you are allergic to… categorized by your allergic reactions. aaaaand everything you hate to eat & why.

    ahahah

I love that your giving yoga another try! To be honest the first few times I did yoga I HATED it… I felt the blood rushing to my head during every downward dog. I was bored, inflexible, etc. Then after persistence, and urging from friends I suddenly became ADDICTED. My body became long, lean and aligned. Now I can’t imagine my life without yoga. If you stick with it, then stop, you will quickly feel the difference. Hang in there, it does wonders for your core/mind/arms/everything!

PS – it helps going with a friend too. One of my fav things is a Saturday morning yoga class followed by coffee or brunch. Good luck!

    xo.

haha, I’m totally going backwards in my Google Reader’s starred items, so sorry this is a few days too late.

I played squash a few times with my friend, but it was just WAY too much running. HAHA. i’m weaksauce.

My husband loves working out, but my schedule doesn’t really allow me to go to the gym much, so I reserve Wednesday nights for boot camp night (since I don’t work on Wednesdays..) so I go once a week and that’s about it. SO LAME, right? I do walk a lot these days… trying to find good places to take pictures. hehe.
