I was asked to talk about something to do with summer, and I immediately knew that I would be writing about my go-to summer outfit. Living in the desert, you learn how to survive the summer heat, but being cool and comfy doesn’t have to interfere with being cute and stylish.
I have a basic formula I like to stick to when I’m not sure what the summer day will bring: shorts, a loose top, shoes I can move in, a cardigan, and sunglasses. The best part of this little formula is its simplicity. The options are limitless and I’m always prepared for the fun summer activities my friends present me with.

When it comes to shorts, my motto has always been “Not too short!” Now, how short too short is, is something every individual needs to decide for themselves, but I like to stick to whatever length I can move in without the constant need to adjust. Some days I prefer shorter shorts than others, but I always aim for being comfortable.
The top is specified loose because there is nothing worse than clingy clothing in the summertime. It’s important to be able to move freely and not feel trapped in a cocoon of hotness (the bad kind, ha). My definition of a loose top is broad and basically includes anything that doesn’t sit directly on my skin at all times. Sometimes I pick a tank top with a billowy hem, other times I pick one of those super wide crop-tops, and other times, yet, I pick a simple blouse that I don’t tuck in all the way.

I love cute shoes, but when I’m out adventuring in the summer, the last thing I want to worry about is my feet, so I stick to cute shoes I can walk, run, jump, and get jiggy-with-it in. For me personally, with average summer temperatures around 110F (43C), I tend to avoid open sandals, because nothing is worse than slipping out of your shoe the tiniest bit and burning yourself on the pavement (been there, done that). If I were living in a slightly cooler climate, sandals that stayed in place when I bounced around would definitely be on my list. As it is, though, I mostly stick to closed-toed flat shoes, either of the laced or ballet variety. If I can play an impromptu game of Frisbee in them, then they are perfect.

Last, but not least, Sunglasses. Protect your eyes, keep from squinting, and look fabulous. The important thing is to wear a pair that blocks 100% of all the bad stuff. I used to have several pair that I would interchange with each outfit (they all broke), but now I have one pair that are prescription and I wear them with every outfit. I love not squinting when I’m in the sun!

There is no limit to how this summer staple of an outfit can be accessorized. Some days I pile the accessories on, others I go out with nothing but a hat on my head. The key is to be comfortable and true to you. It doesn’t matter your style, your size, or your climate, in the summer time there is a way to make this outfit work for you!
