Grumpy Cat says no

by thedemuremuse on February 25, 2013

The past few weeks have been a little strange. I’ve been having trouble sleeping through the night and have been wide awake almost every night from 3 to 6am. After spending the first few nights of insomnia tossing and turning in bed, unable to fall back asleep, I’ve tried to be more productive during these hours. Most days I’ll answer emails or wash the dishes (this is when I know I’m bored since washing dishes is my most hated chore), but other nights have been spent (browser) window shopping. Online shopping is great– who can say no to a store that’s open 24/7 and shopping in the comforts of their pajamas at 3am?So… another ridiculous cat sweater may or may not have ended up in my closet… *shifty eyes*

Maybe my sleepy-eyes deceived me, but I was really hoping this sweater would be more purposefully and obviously over-sized in person, like it looks on the model. When I first tried it on, I felt like I had just bought a boxy, shapeless, men’s sweater with a cat face on it. It’s definitely too short on me to be a sweater dress, but I’m positive that I can figure out a way to reconstruct it! Here are some ideas I’m throwing around:

Which option do you think I should go with?
a. keep the original neckline and sleeve design, but make the sweater more fitted
b. widen the neckline and keep the sleeve design
c. widen the neckline, make baseball-tee style half sleeves

Just in case you’re wondering what the connection is between the title of this post and my thoughts about the sweater:

I’m just going to leave this right here… http://www.grumpycats.com

Hmm. I hate when that happens. How about making it more fitted and possibly taking off the cuffed hem at the bottom? Maybe even shortening (or rolling up) the sleeves.

    • http://thedemuremuse.com katrina of thedemuremuse.com

oooh i am a fan of shorter sleeves! I have them currently cut shorter since I wasn’t able to salvage the original sleeve design in making the body more fitted. We’ll see how attaching the sleeves turns out… thanks for the suggestion!

Personally, I’m really liking option C. I could see this with a little off-the-shoulder action. I’ll look forward to the results! Hope you’re back to a good sleep routine soon, Katrina. ~Sarah

PS My husband LOVES that grumpy cat. Makes him giggle like a schoolgirl. Don’t tell him I told you that. ;)

Option c was definitely my favourite as well, but after thinking about how I want to redo the sleeves, I’m not sure that off-the-shoulder is going to work anymore. I essentially have to change the current design of the sleeves to make them more fitted to match the body. ahhhh… decisions, decision.

hehe i loooove grumpy cat too. something to keep your husband giggling: http://www.grumpycats.com

I honestly like it the way it is! What could be better than a big comfy sweatshirt? I guess if you have to do something, just make it more fitted!

I would be more accepting of the sweater fit if it was advertised as being a big comfy sweater, but I had the impression that it was going to be tunic length, which it turned out not to be. Definitely on track to make this more fitted… hoping to finish sewing it back together tonight so I can share it on the blog tomorrow!

I ordered a pair of XL shorts from OASAP once and received what looked like a tiny pair of floral tap pants for dwarves. I stopped being part of the blogger program after that- if XL to them is a size 2, they are part of the problem.

The sweatshirt is small on you and oversized on what appears to be a waif like 12 year old. Go figure. I think cropped with a high low hemline might be fun. Grumpy cat would stay grumpy. You would be happy. Everyone wins.

“Grumpy cat would stay grumpy. You would be happy. Everyone wins.” haha! this is the best line I’ve ever heard!

Thanks for your suggestion on the high-low hemline. I didn’t think about doing that and I would definitely consider it if the sweater was longer to start. Going to add this a list of ideas for future reconstructions!

Sorry to hear about the OASAP shorts sizing. That’s definitely not cool. It’s one thing to have vanity sizing, but another to have sizing so small that it really doesn’t appeal to real consumers.

Thanks for your suggestion! I started cutting the sweater last night and will be posting the final results on Friday, if I can get all the seams put back together by then.

I hear you on the online shopping front. It was particularly frustrating with this purchase since it would cost quite a bit to mail it back… it feels more “worth it” to me to keep the sweater and try to make it wearable, than spending an extra ~$10 to ship back the sweater to get a refund.

I say go with choice A! I actually love the way this sweater looks on you but I’m excited to see what you do with it :)

Thanks for your vote, Ashley! I know there are mixed opinions about the fit of the sweater. I probably wouldn’t be so uncomfortable with the current fit if I knew that this is what I was going to get before ordering, but my expectations based on the measurements and what I saw on the model were much different than what I received in person.

I can’t wait to share with you the completed reconstruction tomorrow!!

Haha, I hate how oasap stuff looks good on their super stick thin “models” and then when you get it, it’s like poorly constructed and fits terrible. Oh well!

I vote c! can’t wait to see how it turns out!

    • http://thedemuremuse.com katrina of thedemuremuse.com

yeahhhh… definitely not what I was expecting when I opened the package.

I’ll be posting the finished reconstruction tomorrow!
