How to look 5 years younger with a single accessory

I’ve been trying to figure out ways to make biking for a portion of my daily commute doable to supplement the weekend training. With this comes trying to think up creative ways of carrying my laptop, lunch, and other goodies during the commute that works both for the bike and bus. My everyday Jack Spade messenger bag is not exactly the most bike-friendly. I experimented with a backpack this week and let’s just say I think people were confused about which bus I was waiting for…

outfit details:
plaid button down: c/o Aeropostale
herringbone puffer vest: J.Crew Factory
Work It dress pants: Betabrand (exact)
DV8 buckled Laurel bootie: c/o Aeropostale (exact)

With a backpack, I could definitely pass as a college student. Maybe even a high school senior? haha! I can’t quite tell if it’s the outfit or the addition of the backpack that makes me look like such a kid, but I’m going to go with the latter. There you have it: Add a backpack to look at least 5 years younger! ;)

  • Sometimes for work travel I used to take a backpack and I immediately felt like I should be selling girl scout cookies instead of enterprise software. I’m young enough looking already for my job, so I had to kick that habit fast haha

  • I do think you look super cute! When I started grad school at age 29, I started carrying a backpack. That, mixed with my height and my baby face, made EVERYONE – my professors, other students, etc. – think I was around 23. Once school is over, I will probably never use it again! :-)

    • Oh gosh! I’ve always loved Fran’s ( take on toting around her books for med school. I wish I knew of tote options back in the day when in school. Sadly, that doesn’t translate as well on a bike.

  • I think this is a super cute look and not…too kiddie, but definitely one that feels youthful (mostly because your awesome smile makes me think you love to frolic about outside!)

  • The EXACT same thing happened to me when I visited the UW with a backpack!! Haha people just assume that if you carry an old backpack you’re a student, if you can get yourself a nice messenger bag you’re a working man/woman. Your outfit is hella cute as well. That puffer best is giving me lifeee!!

    • Thanks Hector! Can you believe the puffer vest is sold out?!?! it’s like… every blogger’s staple fall/winter layering item!
